The most unforgettable day in my life

I suddenly woke up. It was two o’clock in the morning. I couldn’t realize what had happened to me. I thought I heard some weird sound in my room. But when I looked around my room, it seemed silent and dark like every night.
Out of the blue, something struck my head with a scary sound. I looked back in anger and saw a white thing shaking in the dark. It was too dark so I couldn’t see it exactly. It looked like a person hanging over a rope. I was so frightened that I couldn’t move.
When I trembled for fear, something hit me on the head again and someone shouted. As soon as I heard it, I stood up and ran to the door. As I opened the door, there were my friends setting off firecrackers and shouting. One of them walked to me with a cake and started singing ‘Happy Birthday’.
It was a surprising party for my birthday. Finally I cried out of happiness. It is the most unforgettable birthday in my life until now.

Why is the music important to the different groups of people?

Both pictures show different kinds of musical performance. One of these pictures is about a specific musical performance. In the picture, we can see people wearing special clothes and unfamiliar musical instruments as well. Their ethnic clothes look like they are for a specific ceremony. Besides, they seem serious.
And if you concentrate on the musical instruments, you can find that they are rhythm instruments, you can find that they are rhythm instruments. So it could be a kind of religious ceremony. Rhythm instruments are usually used to encourage someone or create the atmosphere of some important ceremonies more seriously. That’s my opinion but it might be close to the truth. The rhythm music makes people who attend the ceremony solemn and sedate.
On the other hand, the other picture shows people who seem happier and lighter than the first group. They are playing modern instruments while the group in the first picture is playing ethnic instruments. I’m not sure but maybe they are a family. The man who is in the middle might be the youngest man in the group. So it seems to me that they are playing music to give him a happy moment. It could be a special memory for him. If he is not so good at relationship with his friends in school, the experience which is singing in the middle must be a nice way to solve that kind of problem.
So both of them need music. Music is one of the most important things. It can move our mind, that’s why they need it.

I’m Alive!!!

That day, my life changed forever. The morning was the same as yesterday. I made coffee and read a newspaper at my office with the sun shining through the windows. When I was just sitting on my chair and twiddling my thumbs, out of the blue, I started feeling stomachache. It was such a ghastly pain that I tumbled off the chair and shouted. Fortunately, John who is my co-worker in the next room dashed in toward me and called an ambulance.
I didn’t know how much time had passed, but I realized that I was on a bed in hospital when I came around. And I heard someone said the date which I would die. I was shocked but I didn’t move because they seemed not to want to talk with me about it.
I started to think about everyone I know and everything I regretted as soon as I heard it. I couldn’t sand the flow tears, so I woke up.
But when I opened my eyes and looked around, I found people crying. They were standing around and old woman in the bed next to me. As luck would have it, the person who would die on the date was not me but her who was as old as 102 years old!
And the reason of my pain was coffee which I drank in the morning. It had gone off 2 years its expiration date. I felt as if I had been reborn. Since that day, I’ve tried to be friendly and thoughtful to everyone I know. And everything which is around me became valuable. I can say I was reborn. It’s true.

A Great Way to Spend Your Free Time

I’m still a stranger in Dublin. So I often feel uncomfortable although I have plenty of free time. When I first came here, I used to sleep during my whole free time. One day, I felt so nervous even though I had slept more than enough. So I thought I had to do something special to unwind.
But I didn’t have any idea, so I went out without a plan and started to walk around. While I was walking around the city, I saw a great deal of things that I had never noticed before. Everything on the streets was coming to me newly. Since then, planless walking became my new hobby. On the streets, there are plenty of things which are fascinating, like buildings, things for shopping, people selling flowers, singing birds and buskers. It makes me feel alive and healthier. I’m not sure if you agree with me. You may think that it is just something to kill time. But I’m sure it would be obviously be a fresh experience.
The moment you concentrate on everything around you, you can find everything that you know is changing into other things you’ve never seen before. It means, they become special thing to you. It is a kind of repetition of difference. Every time, everything is changing. Walking around and concentrating on them would be knowledge of life.

Dear Anne

Hi! Sorry for not replying faster. I read your e-mail yesterday, but I was very busy.
Anyway, I was very happy while I was reading your e-mail. It’s been a long time, it’s very exciting.
Actually, anytime is ok to come to Korea. As you know, all 4 seasons are beautiful here. So it depends on your taste. In spring, there are various kinds of flowers, and the weather is nice. If you come here in spring time, you can smell everything of spring and hear the sounds of birds. In summer, it’s too hot. But we have sea, you can swim. And you can see a beautiful scenery in fall. The leaves turn red and yellow, the sky is clear. What I do love is winter. It’s so cold but not so cold because there are a lot of warm things. The snow is cold as well, but it makes us feel warmer. To see the scenery which is covered with snow is one of the most breathtaking sceneries. So what I want to tell you is every season is good for trip.
And you told me, you wanted to meet friends who are our own age. I think… a kind of summer camp would be good. So I recommend you Habitat which is a volunteer service to build a house for the homeless. If you participated in it, you would meet nice friends and feel full. It must be a hard time, but you’ll get invaluable experience.
So if you come here in summer, you should bring summer clothes. 4 seasons in Korea have distinct differences, so make you sure the time. Except winter season, your baggage may not so heavy.
Thank you again for your invitation to join your group. What season do you want to come? After knowing the day, I’ll arrange my schedule. It means I’m very excited. I’ll wait for you on the day you will come. Haha. Do you know? I’ll be a nice guide for you!!!!
I’m waiting for your answer.
Big hug.

Saemi.

What you need for the perfect picnic

If you have a plan to go on a picnic, you should prepare something below.
And you'd better prepare it before you sleep in the night before the picnic day.
First, you'll need a light bag. But if you have a car, you may prefer picnic basket to other bags. Don't forget to bring a mat! and if you often feel cold, you'd better put a cardigan in the bag. Some medicines for emergency also will be usefull.
If you feel so excited that you couldn't sleep well, prepare some food for a perfect picnic.
I recommend you special food. Gim-bab(rice rolled in dried laver) is the best food for picnic!
To make Gim-bab, you have to prepare enough boiled rice, plenty of pickled radishs, enough boiled fish pastes, some spinach, a carrot, some eggs, some mayonnaise, a can of tuna, a few sesame oil and enough dried laver.
First, spread dried laver, put and spread the boiled rice on it. And then, put a slice of pickled radish, a slice of boiled fish paste, a few spinach, a slice of carrot, a slice of fried egg, some tuna, and a little mayonnaise on the spreaded rice. Next, roll it up in the dried laver and put sesame oil on it. The last thing is to chop it.
After then, put them in a lunch box. If you don't like the food, skip it and you can cook whatever you like to cook. And the lunch box will be putted into the picnic basket.
Make sure you don't forget to bring quite a few cutlery and enough drink.
Now, you've done to prepare your picnic! But the night is over. You have to go out to go on a picnic now without sleepying... Anyway, enjoy your picnic!

Cover Letter

Cover Letter

Dear John,

From your website I learned about your need for a Building design or Architecture graduate for Dublin, Ireland. I am very interested in it. In Korea, I graduated university and have just got a master’s degree in Architecture theory & design in February 2011, so I believe that my education background is appropriate for the position.

As I wrote, my degree is Architecture theory and design, so I have abilities in both of them. I won the Best Paper Prize by my graduation thesis and the architectural design competition three times in Korea. One of them is the competition to design the main entrance area of my university which is going to be constructed. So I already have my own designed structure. I am confident that my career makes me an excellent candidate for your company. I’d like to repeat that success in your company using my academic background in Architecture design and theory.

Besides, I heard that your recent company project is to renovate old building which belongs university. When I designed the main entrance area of my university, I had researched a lot of case of university architectures. So I’m a competent person for your project. I would welcome the opportunity to interview with you. Within the next week I’ll call you to confirm that you received my e-mail and resume and to answer any questions you may have.

I very much appreciate your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Saemi Kim

Homework 2/3

Long, long times ago, when I was a primary school student, I used to ride a bicycle.
I would go to a supermarket by bicycle. I would park bicycle at the front of the super market. There was a lot of people, so I thought the spot was very safe to park my bicycle. I wouldn't be worried about it.

Oneday, I had only been shopping for 5 minutes, when I became aware that my bicycle was stolen. I felt embarrassed, I didn't know what could I do. Some minutes later, I thought that I had to find my bicycle. So I called my friends who lived nearby there. We decided to check all of corridor at these apartment complex. Each apartment had 16 floors and there were 10 apartments in the complex.

I had been looking for it for about 3 hours, when I saw a familiar silhouette in the dark. So I'd run to there. And it was the silhouette of a my bicycle!!!! It was a my bicycle!!!!!!!!! But it was different before it was stolen. It's a....... looked like a disaster. My bicycle had been covered with red & white colored paint. It was terrible. But it was absolutely my bicycle. It was standing at the front of a game center. So I decided to wait for a thief.

I had been waiting for him for 30 minutes, when I saw a kid trying to ride my bicycle. He looked so young and naive. But the kid is the thief! I couldn't believe that I saw. I went to there and I asked him. "I think this is absolutely my bicycle. Why are you trying to ride mine?" Then he was surprised, and started to cry. He said that he just wanted to get a bicycle. I felt that he was poor, but I changed my mind. Because he was the thief who painted my bicycle red&white!!!!! But I was too young, so I could only bring back my bicycle.

homework 2/2

I like to travel. Overseas travel is the best but travelling within the country is good, either.
Korea is a very beautiful country. And a countryside is more beautiful than a city. But because of the reason(more beautiful is found at more country), more beautiful place has less means of transportation.
So this happened to me when I was traveling Dam-yang which is a very beautiful countryside of Korea. I wanted to see Buddist temple, so I went to there. But when I went out the front door of the temple, buses which pass by there had been closed. Even the time was only 5 pm!!!!!!
So I was very confused. I didn't know what could I do. I had been flustering when I saw a police who was coming out from the door. So I asked him what could I do to go out. Then he said that he would bring me to the city. Besides, he let me see very beautiful road by driving. I had only been running by the car for about 10 minutes, when I saw a very beautiful road. I had wanted to drive the road, but it's impossible to me. Because I didn't have a drivers license. But he made it possible!!! And the car was the patrol car!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!! I had felt very exited, so I said "Really really thank you!!!!!". It's a very special memory of my travel.

homework 1/31

1. Stuck in the snow

15 years ago, it was New Year's Day after of Korea.
I was coming home with my family from my uncle's home by car. It had been snowing for 1 day, everywhere was filled with snow. Finally, we were stuck in the snow on the express highway. It seemed that the snowing never stop.
We had been standing on the express highway for 35 hours. While we were standing on the highway, I and my younger brother could make 2 snowmen of great height. And we even slept in the car on the road. at that time, the highway was not a highway but a huge parking place. Everyone on the highway slept in the car.
It had been going on snowing so the heavy snow caused temporary closure of all schools. When we arrived at home, we had been utterly exhausted. That's the only one of my terrible memory of snowing.

2. Starving

Can you imagine? I feel hungry all the time.
I don't know since when I've felt hungry all the time. I just can guess.
I think my starving has been started since I arrived in Dublin. When I was in Korea, rice is the principal food of me. Ok, exactly, the principal food of the Koreans is rice. At that time, I didn't feel hungry much. Only skip meal could cause starving of me. Because (I don't know exactly) rice has an ability to keep the feeling of fullness. But cireal, potato, hamburger, pizza.... and so on are different. they makes me full quickly and feel hungry quickly too. It's a kind of disaster to me. I've never felt these kind of hungriness. I had liked to eat the kind of foods in Korea, but it was just one time for a day. I can't stand starving. So I often tell my friends "I'm starving!!"

3. My First Cat

Actually, my parents(especially dad) like dogs very much. So before I was born, they already had dogs. It wasn't 'a' dog, it was 'dogs'. Since I was born, I have had a lot of dogs already. They were very clever and friendly pets. I loved them but I wanted to have a kitty. So I asked my parents very carefuly, but they had not permitted. I had known why they answerd no but I really want to get. As you know, the bad relationship of the dogs and the cats was common sense.
One day morning, when I had been woken, I heard sounds of cats out of my door. There are 5 cats. They were very cute kitties. As soon as I had shown them, I shouted to call my parents. So then my dad had come to me and he said that a cat which is their mom would come here soon to bring her kitties. He said she temporarily put them on here to look for food. Anyway as kitties had been being in here, I was very happy. So I gave them some foods and blanket. But after about 3 hours, they had been gone. I was so depressed but now I'm ok. Now I know that the position of us(I and the Cats) is different.

4. My dad told me once that when he helped an woman.
She was a neighbor who was a mute lived nearby my home. She was very poor because she hadn't ability to get a job. Actually my family was not wealthy neither, my dad was used to help other people. And I hadn't known about that before he told me.

Spring Summer Fall Winter and Spring - Korean Movie

Spring Summer Fall Winter and Spring
2003, Ki-Deok Kim

Actually I don't like Ki-duk Kim who is the director of this movie that much. In this movie, women are always the root of bad things which are happened to men like 'Adam and Eve'. Nevertheless, I watched most of his movies and especially this one is one of my favorite movies. If someone asks me what`s my favorite movie, I would say the title of this movie.
Ki-duk Kim want to talk about human desires in his movie. All of his movies have such a theme. And this movie is too. He described desire using 'Karma' from a Buddhist perspective. We often compare our lives with the seasons. We are trapped in the eternal cycle. It seems like a commonplace idea in my country, but the most important thing about this movie is how it describes desire. This is why this movie is important to me.
When I saw this movie, it was New Year's Day in Korea. I'd wanted to see this movie for a long time, I couldn't take my eyes off the TV when I saw it. So I can't forget what I felt. It was a kind of magic!
The movie was set in a Buddhist temple floating on a beautiful lake. The temple is floating in the middle of the lake and has doors without walls. It was a great landscape for this movie. After I saw the film I wanted to visit the temple, but the it doesn’t exist anymore. It was only a set. It was pulled down after the film, but the lake's own scene is very beautiful, too. So I'll go there someday. Even though in the film the temple doesn't have walls, everyone still uses the doors. I think that's the world which the director thought up. And the invisible walls represent the ways of desire.
A child who was tormenting a frog made me sad because I saw his karma in the scene. When he came back to the temple after he killed his wife, I felt burdened. Spring, summer, fall, winter and spring. Karma cycles over and over again like the seasons and the returning spring is a new spring. I think that it's the same spring but in a different way.

Movie Chracters I like / don't like

My Favorite Movie Character

"Captain Jack Sparrow" - Pirates of the Caribbean

I like Captain Jack Sparrow.
I think most of you like him, too.
Because he has both bright side and dark side.
He is very funny guy, has a very funny way of talking but he looks lonely.
He looks like a troublemaker, but actually he is very talented.
So he'll find the key to solve the problem.
Finally, he makes every other people happy.
This is why I laugh but feel depressed when I see him.

Not good for me, but interesting character

"Teresa Lisbon" - The Mentalist (TV Drama)

Frankly speaking, I can't remember which character I don't like.
So I'm going to tell about drama character.
In the drama, my favorite is Jane, but I'll tell Lisbon because I talk about 'not so good'
(But it doesn't mean that I hate her. Just 'not good' for me)
Lisbon is a strict police, but not so much smart.
She seems to behave in priciple, but she always overlooks Jane's breach.
So she is pressed by her boss. She always has a kind of moral pressure.
Actually she is very kind and naive. She doesn't know anything but Jane know everything.
That's why I feel bored when I see her with Jane.

homework 1/20

1. Continuous forms (Possible - P / Impossible - I)

a) He is working in a hotel during the summer holidays. - Now, he is doing his work (P)
b) I've been thinking about what you said yesterday. - after you said, my thinking continues (P)
c) When I saw him, Ben was looking down at his magazine. (P)
d) I don't like the rainy weather. - I think 'like' can't be changed into the continuous form. 'like' is already telling about present and continuance. So the verb presenting emotion(like, love, hate, want, ...etc) can't use as continuous form. (I)
e) Susan has have a lot of problems with her car recently. - 'Have' meaning like 'take' can't use as continuous form. Because I think 'have' contains already continuance like 'like'. (I)
f) While Fred is sitting at home, his wife was out looking for work. (P)
g) I don't know why Juliette is so difficult. (I)
